Featured Painting: Le Chat Noir
Le Chat Noir was the first modern cabaret in Paris and is French for “The Black Cat.”
Le Chat Noir was the most exciting place to be for the emerging artist during this era. Artist Rodolphe Salis acquired this new cabaret and hired Theophile Steinlen to design a poster for his new cabaret.
This poster was made in 1896 to advertise the tour to other cities. Poets, writers, musicians, and singers would jump to their feet and perform in front of their fellow artists and peers, who would provide instant feedback on their work.
